Fixings
Fixings is inspired by diet cards of the midcentury. In this cookbook, the desaturated aspics and casseroles of the past are reincarnated into elegant, gourmet dishes. From Ham & Banana Hollandaise to Crown Roast of Frankfurters, this brand is a celebration of the nausea-inducing and downright bizarre. The book features 15 original recipes, which highlight the original inspiration and explain how each component has been thoughtfully re-imagined into a delicious new dish.
Banned Books
Winner, HOW Design Awards, Student Work 2019. This series was created in celebration of banned books week. These three titles- The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe, The Wizard of Oz, and A Wrinkle in Time- were banned for their references to beautiful, mysterious, and dangerous magic. As such, I wanted the illustrations to be whimsical and sinuous. All three books involve an unexpected and magical journey with humble beginnings. The silhouettes on the dust jackets can be removed to reveal more detailed illustrations underneath, to reflect the way that these books show magic just beyond the mundane, visible to people curious or brave enough to seek it out.
Rise & Set
Rise & Set is an exhibition inspired by the true story of three incredible women: Sutematsu Yamakawa Oyama, Shige Nagai Uriu, and Ume Tsuda. In the mid 1800s, three young girls from the prominent samurai families were sent to America on an important mission. They were to receive an education in America and learn about Western culture. The youngest among them was just six years old when their journey began, and none spoke English. The exhibition catalog is broken into three books, each book focusing on one of the girls, and one leg of their journey. The visual style was developed to reflect both Japanese and American cultures- calling to mind quilting, the process of stitching together two disparate things to make something entirely new.
Beowulf
Beowulf was inspired by my love of the epic poem, as well as John Gardner's Grendel. I wanted the book to feel modern, but also rooted in the ancient. The cyclical nature of the poem is reflected in the illustrations. Collage elements in the character design connect this story to other mythologies. I composed each illustration to represent the aspirational permanence of societies of the past and present: tarnished splendor, rust, dried blood, and sunsets. I hope the illustrations reflect the way we revisit the old and make it new, over and over again.
